Secure all doors - if your front and back doors are not secure, neither is your home. Make sure that your back door is secure before responding to callers at the front.

Fit a door viewer so that you can check who is at the door before opening. More information can be viewed on the bogus callers page.

Fit a security chain to your door and use it before you open the door, especially to any unexpected callers.

Make sure the doors and frames are strong and are in good condition. Doors should be made of solid core construction and be at least 44mm (one and three quarter inches) thick.

Glass panels on or around the door are especially vulnerable, so replace them with laminated glass.

Fit back and front doors with a five-lever mortice deadlock - and use it.

Fit all exterior doors - top and bottom - with bolts. Remember to fit all security devices with strong screws or bolts.

Look in your phone directory for the names of local locksmiths who are members of the Master Locksmiths Association.

If you are buying a new door make sure it is constructed to Product Assessment Specifications (PAS) 024. This ensures your doors are designed with security in mind.
