Safer Homes in Somerset

What is Safer Homes in Somerset?

Our Mission

Working in partnership, the Somerset Burglary Strategy aims to make our County the 'best in their class' in respect of combating burglary. We intend to achieve this by developing new and existing processes throughout the Criminal Justice System and between the partner agencies.

Four themes that the partners will focus upon are:

Primary Prevention

Early intervention to prevent individuals from entering a life of crime.

Situational Prevention

Identification and targeting of victims and potential victims of crime.

Identification and targeting of hotspot and potential hotspot areas of crime.

Enforcement and Criminal Justice

Bringing offenders to justice

Secondary Prevention

Identifying and diverting known offenders from a life of crime.

Reintegrating offenders into society.

The Partners:

  • Avon and Somerset Constabulary
  • Crown Prosecution Service
  • Government Office South West
  • Mendip District Council
  • Prison Service
  • Probation Service
  • Sedgemoor District Council
  • Somerset County Council
  • South Somerset District Council
  • Taunton Deane Borough Council
  • West Somerset District Council

Research into the victim, location and offender of burglary in Somerset carried out by the Police formed the foundation of this Strategy.

From the research or profile of burglary carried out, the partners developed objectives around four strategic themes; Primary Prevention, Situational Prevention, Enforcement and Secondary Prevention.

The themes focus on vulnerable people, vulnerable premises, young people and diversion and dealing with offenders.
